Community Rail Lancashire (CRL) joined Network Rail and partners in Hull to help promote vital rail safety messages ahead of Hull Fair.

With Hull Fair bringing thousands of visitors to the city, Network Rail held a special rail safety event to highlight the importance of staying safe around the railway and using level crossings correctly.

Catherine Kingdom from Community Rail Lancashire attended the event and supported the rail safety activities, helping to reinforce the message that everyone has a part to play in keeping themselves and others safe around the railway.

One of the highlights was an opportunity to experience a train driving simulator, giving participants an insight into the railway environment and the responsibilities involved in operating a train.

The event also brought together railway and emergency-service partners, providing young people with an opportunity to learn more about railway safety through practical and interactive activities.

The importance of the event was particularly relevant with Hull Fair taking place close to the railway at Walton Street. Increased pedestrian numbers in the area mean that awareness of level-crossing safety is especially important during the fair period.

Network Rail’s message is clear: always follow the signs and signals at level crossings, never take unnecessary risks, and remember that trains cannot stop quickly.

For CRL, supporting initiatives such as this forms part of its wider work with schools, young people and railway partners to promote positive and safe attitudes towards the railway.
