Along with colleagues at the National Railway Museum and East Lancs Railway Karen, our education team leader, organised and led the Education Programme on International Women’s Day, when the Flying Scotsman was operated by an all-female crew. Four classes from schools in Bury were given the opportunity to join the celebrations on the 8th March at East Lancashire Railway and Bury Transport Museum. Four members of the team, Catherine, Caroline, Dave and Shahiesta, joined Karen in delivering a range of activities for each class. They heard from women from the rail industry about their careers and the exciting opportunities available in the rail industry, explored Bury Transport Museum, had the rail safety story Arlo’s Adventure’s read to them and met the author Bessie. The highlight for all was a trip from Bury Bolton Road Station to Rawtenstall on the famous Flying Scotsman, which is celebrating 100 years.
